Monday - Errands and Chinatown
Jan 7th, 2008 by Nick
I moved to the Hilton Sydney yesterday afternoon. It’s a far different experience than the Four Points. The hotel is very sleek, with Scandinavian influences in in-room design. The rooms are much smaller than my two-room suite at the Four Points, but about the same size as a regular room there. I’ve traded a view of the harbour for a 38th floor view of Town Hall a block away, and tons of public transportation.
Which do I prefer? The Four Points was a better value with the discounted award, but I think the Hilton is a better overall option for an award stay.
I’m taking advantage of the location to make quick hits in and out of the hotel. Yesterday, I took a couple of walks to run some basic errands such as going to the grocery for supplies, and filling a prescription for some ashtma medication for the side effects of getting better. Being sick has whacked my appetitte, so I picked up a late lunch of a sausage roll at one of the food courts in the shopping centers that seem to appear every two blocks along George Street.
At about 9pm, I figured I’d better get dinner, so I caught a bus outside my hotel and took it down to Chinatown. I had recommendations for a couple of expensive options which were going to be a waste so I skipped them, and then a couple of inexpensive options. [This is for Ken, who wanted a food review…] I ended up at Emperor’s Palace BBQ, only a block west of George Street. I didn’t want anything spicy, which is unlike me, so I ordered a soupe of some duck meat in broth and an order of BBQ Pork. The soup was meh, a little too congealed, not enough flavor. The pork was very good, although I was annoyed that they had used peanuts for garnish to keep the pork from swimming in the sauce. The portion was huge, and I couldn’t possibly finish it. Add in a bottle of sparkling water, and it was A$24.
So what did you do about the peanuts? Send the dish back, or break out the epinephrine?
Neither - the peanuts were just garnish, so I just sacrificed a couple of pieces of pork near the bottom. The portion was large and my appetite is still not close to 100%, so it was just an annoyance.
