The Draft Tasmanian Itinerary
Nov 16th, 2007 by Nick
One of the most intriguing parts of the trip to me is the ability to go to Tasmania. Somehow just the word evokes a sense of something exotic… Tas-MANIA! Now, saying you’re going to “see Tasmania” is like saying you’re going to “see California,” but I have 106 hours to make the most of it. My goal is to cover one city, a few towns, and one or two major natural beauty sights. And to drive a car for the first time internationally without killing myself or somebody else.
Here’s the skeleton of the plan:
- Monday: A very early wake up call from Melbourne to get out to the airport for my breakfast flight to Hobart. Rent a car, spend an hour driving in out of the way places to get the feel of it, then head into Hobart proper.
- Tuesday: This is the big driving day. The plan right now is to both see Port Arthur and drive up to Coles Bay. This might be too much, even though the distance doesn’t seem that far.
- Wednesday: I’d like to spend most of the day at Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay. A little like hiking
- Thursday: More exploring along the coast, including watching the penguins at Bichemo. Also, probably some time for administrivia such as laundry.
- Friday: Make my way through St. Helens to Launceston, drop off the car, and fly back to Melbourne late that night.
It still needs a lot of fine tuning, especially the tradeoff between Hobart, Port Arthur, stopping in lots of small towns, and a lot of winding driving…
